MSC Flaminia resumes MSC charter
German post-panamax containership MSC Flaminia will rejoin its charterer Mediterranean Shipping Company this week after a two-year ordeal of salvage, repairs, and retrofitting.
The ship, which was ravaged by a blaze on a transatlantic crossing in July 2012, will be delivered to its charterer on 23 July at the port of La Spezia, ship manager Reederei NSB said today. According to German chartering brokers, the ship will resume its employment with MSC at a hire rate of $15,275 + €12,975 for five years. The long-term charter cover was apparently pivotal for the financing of extensive retrofit measures at Daewoo's Mangalia shipyard in Romania, aimed at improving the ship's fuel economies.
NSB said that a new bulbous bow and propeller have been installed in addition to all necessary repairs.
Both together would allow the vessel's operator to achieve a 12% saving on heavy fuel oil consumption under ideal sea conditions, the ship manager said. The MSC Flaminia had been docked at Daewoo Mangalia since February after extensive clean-up and decontamination works in Denmark.
