A NEW bridge, across the Beilun River, separating Vietnam's Mong Cai city and China's Dongxing city, has commenced construction three kilometres from the old bridge.
The CNY180 million (US$29.05 million) bridge will be 549 metres long and 27.7 metres wide, and have four main lanes and two stop lanes with a 60-kilometre per hour speed limit. All but CNY60 million will be paid by China.
The old bridge, the only bridge on the Beilun River, was rebuilt in the 1990s and is 125 metres long. Increasing freight and passenger flow has outstripped its capacity.
Dongxing city is an important gateway between China and ASEAN. Every year, more than five million people travel via Dongxing's border checkpoint, which has the greatest trade value of all checkpoints in Guangxi.
