THE northern Suzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal recorded a cargo traffic 272 million tonnes in 2013, refreshed the record by climbing 13.7 per cent year on year, Xinhua reports.
Containers moved on the northern Suzhou canal section, which is qualified as second-level navigation channel, amounted to 45,600 TEU in 2013. Cargo turnover on the section grew 10.9 per cent to 48.7 billion tonnes per kilometre.
The northern Suzhou section is the one of the highest navigation channel level and has the largest cargo traffic among all sections of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, which runs from China's capital city to eastern coastal city of Hangzhou in Yangtze River Delta.
The 404-kilometre-long section runs form Xuzhou city in the north to Yangzhou city in the south, passing Suqian and Huaian city. It is one of the major coal transportation routes between north and south China.
