Turkish Energy & Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz  referred to the high amount of tankers passing through Turkish Straits, and said around 150-170 million tons of oil and oil products were crossing the Straits right now."This figure will be above 200 million tons soon," he said. Yildiz said Turkey could naturally not prohibit transit from Straits, but could raise barriers, thanks to alternative routes.

On the 10th April Capt. Fahrettin Aksu (54) fell into the sea during disembarkation from reefer ship “Sun Genius”, after completing his duty. It was 03:20 local time and freeboard of the ship was 5 meters. Capt. Aksu was climbing down the ladder and after a few steps, he suddenly fell.
