THE Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has revised the schedule for the phase-out of single hull tankers operating in Nigeria waters until 2021.
Under the UN's Interntional Maritime Organisation (IMO) revised Regulation 13G (now Regulation 20) of Annex 1 to MARPOL (marine pollution), flag administrations were required to phase out single hull tankers by 2015.
While existing licence renewals are permitted there will no new registrations of single hulled tankers allowed.
In view of the difficulty in achieving wholesale fleet renewal, the IMO extended the deadline for certain categories of tanker not engaged in international trade, reported London's Tanker Operator.
This decision is intended to "sustain the development of the Nigerian maritime industry and enhance the gains of the cabotage laws".
