KOREAN shipyards now dominate the world market for building ships in excess of 20,000 TEU after winning 19 of the 21 orders placed globally.
The northeast Asian nation's shipyards of Samsung Heavy Industries, the Subic shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) in the Philippines, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) won the 19 orders. Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding secured the two remaining orders, reports Business Korea.
Leading the pack is Samsung Heavy Industries after winning the most orders. It has received 10 orders, half the total orders for containerships exceeding 20,000 TEU placed in the world to date.
Also, it was the first shipyard in South Korea to win an order for a 20,000-TEU ship, as well as the order for the largest vessel of 21,100 TEU.
HHIC's Subic shipyard has won the contract to build three 20,600-TEUers for French shipping line CMA CGM. DSME won an order for four 20,000-TEU ships from Maersk, while HHI recently landed the deal to build two 20,000-TEU vessels for Vancouver-headquartered, but Hong Kong-administered Seaspan.
The industry expects an additional 30 orders will be awarded this year to build mega containerships.
