Antwerp 2011 container volumes up 2pc to record-breaking 8.6 million TEU

THE Port of Antwerp posted a two per cent increase in 2011 container volume to 8.6 million TEU hitting an all time high, say port authorities.

THE Port of Antwerp posted a two per cent increase in 2011 container volume to 8.6 million TEU hitting an all time high, say port authorities.

Ro-ro volume also increased - 13.3 per cent to 4.2 million tonnes - as the number of cars surpassed one million mark, up of 14.7 per cent.

Overall, the port handled 186.4 million tonnes of freight during the year, a 4.6 per cent increase on 2010 volume of 178.2 million tonnes. Conventional and breakbulk cargo grew 14.8 per cent to 12.7 million tonnes year on year.
