Turkey’s first private container port, Marport, received three certificates in 2007 as part of the Integrated Management System (IMS) as confirmation of the fact that it has brought its terminal operations up to world standards. In order to maintain its reputation for occupational health/safety and environmental issues, Marport continues to provide the same high-quality work.

Last year, Marport certified the quality of the services it provides by obtaining the ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Assesment Series) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System) certificates, thus proving its commitment to the environment as well as occupational health and safety. Marport continues to constantly update its port services on the quality journey.

1,106 vessels serviced in the first 8 months, an increase of 11%.

The ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 certificates have contributed to improved service standards at Marport and the triple Integrated Management System (IMS) that it created by combining the certificates enabled it to rapidly solve problems and deficiencies, to find and eliminate the primary reasons and to reduce costs. As a result, the Marport terminals handled 44% of the
   
container traffic in the Marmara region in 2007 and its annual capacity rose to 1,700,000 TEU. At the end of August 2008, 1,024,338 TEU had been handled and 1,106 vessels served, an 11% increase compared to the same period last year.

Accident risk factors and workforce losses declined

Marport provides service that meets international standards in its terminal operations with 9 SSG (Ship to Shore Gantry), 35 RTG cranes (Rubber Tyred Gantry) as well as mobile winches. With IMS it creates the best possible work conditions for its employees. The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) data attest to the proper functioning of this system. During the time that has elapsed since the quality certificates were obtained, risk factors for a variety of accidents have declined while labor losses experienced due to illness have been minimized. Approximately 1000 trees have been saved with the recycling project as a result of responsible consumption of natural resources.

OHSAS 18001 in operation

The OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Assesment System aims to improve the conditions which affect the health and safety of employees at every stage in port operations. The best possible working environment is being created by taking measures to protect against accidents and other risk factors which may occur at the port.The commitment and sensitivity shown in compliance to national and international legal standards also improves productivity in the workplace. The infrastructure required to establish OHSAS 18001 ensures a rapid and easy transition in adopting the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems. ISO 9001 reflects the fact that the company has made efforts aimed at constant improvement and a systematic approach to customer-oriented management and ISO 14001 shows that it has proven to be more sensitive to the environment in its operations.
