Dock strike threatens again after workers stomp out over lunch money
HONG KONG's 40-day dock strike threatened to break out again when 200 dockers, invited to an employer's goodwill dinner, walked out and threatened to "resign" unless they received more lunch money.
The dinner was held by the largest contractor, Wing Fung Stevedoring, and all went well until the dockers learned that there would be no lunch money as there had been in the past - only the 9.8 per cent pay increase offered. This prompted them to walk out, reported Hong Kong's TVB and Cable TV.
Earlier, Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung commended the efforts of officials in mediating between workers and employers to resolve the strike at Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) at Kwai Chung.
Speaking to the media, Mr Leung said the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, the Commissioner for Labour and their staff faced a difficult task in getting both sides to reach a compromise.
