Decline continues to 2.2pc as Asia-Europe rate hits US$500/TEU

FREIGHT rates across all major trade lanes continued to fall last week, but the rate of decline slowed, following a series of announcements by carriers that rates will go up heading into the New Year.

MSC, CMA CGM to share fleets on Asia/Europe-Africa-South America routes

GENEVA's Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Marseilles' CMA CGM have decided to share their fleets to optimise operations in face of growing dominance by the No 1 carrier, Maersk Line in Copenhagen.
MISC Berhad (MISC) plans to sell 16 containerships as the company is exiting the liner business.

According to MISC in a reply to Bloomberg, the company plans to conduct sales within about six months and any containership not sold in that period will be kept in “a short re-activation mode†until the end of 2012.
Maersk scraps new ICON service to merge it into 'Daily Maersk' scheme

MAERSK Line is preparing to "merge" its North Europe-Middle East-eastern India (ICON) service, marketed by Safmarine as Prime 2 within its Asia-Europe "Daily Maersk" network, starting from February 2012, according to Alphaliner.

ALPHALINER is predicting that with a few exceptions, shipping lines will end 2011 in the negative earnings territory, and it expects fourth quarter results will be weaker than in the third quarter, on the back of low volumes and crumbling freight rates with the winter slack season biting in.
