OCEAN carriers are losing US$141 for every TEU shipped from Shanghai to
north Europe route, as consumer demand weakens, according to analysts at
ACM/GFI, a joint-venture between London-based ACM Shipping and GFI
Group.
"Current rates on Asia to Europe are lower than the lows seen in 2009
when shipping companies were losing $41 for each 20-foot box that June,"
said ACM/GFI, reported London's International Freighting Weekly.
Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSFI) figures are the basis of the
assessment, which looked at Shanghai to north-west Europe from Shanghai
that included fuel and other surcharges, said the report.
Rates for Shanghai to north Europe fell 4.1 per cent in the last week of
October, the eighth drop in nine weeks, according to the SSFI, also
revealing that rates hit a record high of $2,165 in March 2010.
