DANISH Maersk Line recently announced it has decided to integrate its subsidiary Safmarine's corporate functions by closing Antwerp head office and regional offices in Antwerp, Shanghai, Dubai, Cape Town and Mumbai, as well as centre support functions in Singapore and Cape Town.

Some 240 employees will be laid off, but Maersk CEO Eivind Kolding said the Safmarine brand will be kept due to its good exposure in north-south and African trades.

The integration intends to gain synergy and boost the efficiency and reduce operational costs of running two ocean container carriers, said the company statement.

"It is our clear intention to strengthen the Safmarine brand. Over its long history it has become a force to be reckoned with in its markets and customers value its distinctive approach to deep and lasting relationships," explained Mr Kolding.

Maersk, the world's largest carrier, said the multi-purpose vessel business of Safmarine will not be affected by the integration and continue to be developed from its Antwerp base.

Current Safmarine CEO Tomas Dyrbye will leave the company and his successor will be announced shortly.
