Roro ferry sank off Safaga, all 37 on board rescued
Egypt’s naval forces have rescued 37 people on board of the "Taba" near Safaga Port at the coast of the Red Sea on July 5, 2015.
The ferry had left Safaga Port bound to Duba, but developed an increasing list to starboard side and started sinking after sailing 20 nautical miles away from Safaga.
The ship sent a distress signal to the Safaga Naval Base, which sent three launches and rescued the crew. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 37 passengers, 10 of whom were drivers of 43 cargo trucks carrued on board of the ship.
All of the passengers were Egyptian except for a Sudanese and a Lebanese. Three crew members injured with fractures and six others with bruises.
The Minister of Transport Hany Dahi formed a technical committee to investigate the incident.
According to first information the "Taba" sank due to lack of balance because many of the cargo trucks on board of the ship were placed on one side instead of being distributed.
The Ro-Ro ferry Taba (IMO: 8318104) has overall length of 117.00 m, moulded beam of 17.00 m and maximum draft of 4.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 3,133 DWT and the gross tonnage is 6,650 GRT. The ferry was built in 1985 by Neue Schlichting Werft in their shipyard in Lubeck, Germany. The vessel is owned and operated by the Egypt company Egyptian Navigation.
