The 399-m container vessel MSC London passed through the Strait of Canakkale yesterday morning.
Escorted by 3 tugs of the Turkish Coastal Safety Administration and pilot from the same company, it took for MSC London 3 hours to pass from Aegean to Marmara sea.
The ship had 13,8 meters of draught and average speed was 13 knots through the Strait. The tugs Kurtarma-3, Kurtarma-5 and Kurtarma-10 escorted the giant ship, which was the largest in length that passed so far.
In 1985, the tanker Büyük Selçuklu passed through Çanakkale (Dardanelles) straits, which had 375 meters of length, but with 200.000 GRT it was larger in volume.
