Damaged Cape Baltic en route to Istanbul for repairs
The "Cape Baltic" left the docks of Musel on Feb 9 at 4 p.m. bound for a shipyard in Istanbul where repairs are to be carried out at several tanks which had had flooded due to cracks in the hull. ETA Istanbul is Feb 17, 7.30 p.m.
How accident happened
Cape Baltic sustained structural damage in the night of Jan 28 when anchoring on Gijjón roads during a storm.
While releasing its anchor, the bottom damage and a flooded ballast tank were caused either by the anchor or too much draught of the ship, though it should have had enough clearance with 18 metres draught in a water depth of 20 metres, but maybe it hit the ground due to wave impact.
