On July 31st 2012, P + S Werften in Wolgast, delivered the second ( hull no. 564) of four coastal patrol ships to the Swedish Coast Guard. The new vessels will be able to operate all year round in the Baltic, in the Gulf of Bothnia, in the Skagerak and Kategatt, as well as in the second and third largest lakes in Sweden, VÀnern and MÀlaren, and in European coastal areas, even under winter conditions with an outside temperature of up to -25°C.

These ships will perform tasks and provide services for which several ships of the Swedish Coast Guard currently still have to be used.

The vessel, approximately 52 m long and 10 m wide KBVs (KBV = Kustbevakningen Vessel), will be used by the Swedish Coast Guard to cover its full range of tasks:

  • Monitoring of shipping traffic in the coastal area
  • Border protection
  • Customs service
  • Fishery protection

Furthermore, this new type of ship “Swedish Coast guard Multi-purpose Ship KBV” will, due to special equipment, be able to fight fires at sea and in ports, and take on Search and Rescue (SAR) services, as well as accident work for the removal of oil pollution. The oil sucked off from the surface of the water is pumped, via the oil skimmers attached at both sides, into tanks which can take in up to 250 m3 of the oil-water mixture. The coast guard vessels are designed and built for a service life of 30 years.
