CHINESE shipyard Huaran Dadong has widened a 4,860-TEU capacity containership, the MSC Geneva, to carry 6,300 TEU.
The project - a world first - took four months to complete, and the ship's German owner Reederei NSB now plans to use the same yard to widen two more vessels.
NSB said other shipping lines and investors should consider the pioneering extension, where between two to four rows of containers can be added, reported Splash 247.
"Apart from converting ships of existing fleets, purchasing a used ship and having it widened is less costly than ordering a new one," NSB said, adding ships suitable for widening are panamaxes delivered after 2005.
The company plans to offer its expertise in this new field to others and says it has already received plenty of enquiries.
