MAERSK has a new building order with Cosco Shipyard in Zhoushan, an island city off the coast of Ningbo, for seven 3,600-TEU vessels for its Euro-Med short-sea Seago Line.
The ships will be 200 metres long and 35.2 metres wide drawing 10 metres and forms part of a Maersk investment programme in which US$15 billion will go into newbuilding, retrofits, containers and other equipment over the next five years.
In a statement, the shipping line said it will be able to add capacity in line with growth in global container shipping demand as well as replace less efficient chartered tonnage.
"This new order is the first in our investment programme. Our strategy is to grow with the market and to do so we need new vessels from 2017," said Maersk Line chief operations officer Soren Toft, adding that more orders would come this year,
The vessels, built to trade in Northern Europe through sea ice, will achieve unprecedented economies of scale. They will provide Seago Line short-sea and feeder customers with competitive services.
Deployed in the Baltic and North Sea, the ships replace several vessels, half the size and will burn compliant low-sulphur fuel, with delivery expected in April - November 2017.
It is the first time that Maersk Line places a newbuilding order with Cosco Shipyard. It is also the first time the shipyard will build container vessels. However, Maersk has worked with Cosco Shipbuilding for retrofits and dry docking.
