GREENER ships will be granted 10 per cent discount or more on tonnage
based harbour dues at the port of Antwerp if Environmental Ship Index
(ESI) scores are 31 or above from July 1.
Antwerp port authority intends to run the scheme for a period of three years in an effort to encourage vessels to improve or acquire an ESI score.
The index from the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) is calculated on emissions scores of SO2 and CO2 from 0 to 100 and fuel consumption with a view to rewarding vessels that reduce pollutants.
For the last two years, the ports of Le Havre, Bremen, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Antwerp have worked closely with IAPH to develop the ESI since its launch at the beginning of this year.
The voluntary scheme has awarded 250 ships with an ESI score and allows the participating ports to reward ships whether in port dues or rates.
