THE 400-metre first section of the East Terminal at Colombo Port's South Harbour has been officially opened by Ports and Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga, reports Splash 24/7 of Singapore.
Before container-handling gear arrives in July, the East Terminal will handle large conventional general cargo vessels.
The state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), which owns the facility, has invested US$80 million in the terminal with 18 metres alongside and will eventually have a quay length of 1,200 metres.
The East Terminal is the second of three such 2.4 million TEU capacity facilities being created in the U-shaped South Harbour. The first, Colombo International Container Terminal, has been in operation since August 2014, but no work has been started at the third terminal as yet.
When the East Terminal is fully operational by end-2015, the container-handling capacity of Colombo port will rise to nine million TEU.
