The terminal also handled a number of calls from Singapore's Pacific International Lines and Advance Container Lines. More recently however, AIPT managed to secure regular calls from the Chennai to Yangon of the Gold Land Express, which deploys the 1,083-TEU Munich Trader.
AIPT is now one of three terminals in Yangon's Ahlone neighbourhood. It adds to the larger Asia World Port Terminal (AWPT), located next to MIP, which the same size as AIPT
Located in Yangon's western Ahlone District, the new pier is equipped to handle mid-sized containerships, and it offers a 600-metre berth.
After a number of test calls from small and mid-sized multipurpose and general cargo vessels, the new pier was formally opened in March.
The development of AIPT 1 was funded by the Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) one of the two major conglomerates and holding companies operated by the Burmese military.
In addition to the three terminals at Ahlone, there are further container handling facilities at Yangon. The largest of these is the Myanmar International Terminal at Thilawa (MITT), downriver from the city. Despite its larger size (1,000 metres of pier, 75 hectare), this Hutchison-run facility currently attracts only a small number of container calls.
