THE South Carolina Ports Authority that runs Charleston and Georgetown harbours, as well as the inland port in Greer, has posted a March container volume of 171,113 TEU - up 13.7 per cent year on year..
Fiscal year to date, the SCPA handled 1.4 million TEU, an increase of 14.3 per cent over the same period a year earlier, a statement from port authorities said.
As measured in pier containers, or the total number of boxes handled, containerised cargo is up 15 per cent fiscal year to date compared to last year to 798,000 boxes.
"I'm confident the port will handle over one million boxes by the end of our fiscal year in June," said SCPA CEO Jim Newsome.
"We're seeing broad-based growth across all sectors, particularly refrigerated cargo and automotive manufacturing. Discretionary cargo volumes are also up, with the growth of retail imports and agricultural exports reflected in a nearly 25 per cent increase in rail moves last month."
The inland port of Greer handled 5,187 rail moves in March, achieving its highest volume since the facility opened in November 2013. Fiscal year to date, the inland port handled 40,313 rail moves.
