TOKYO's Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting (NRIC) has upgraded its outlook for the Japanese container trade for the next 12 months, citing a modest US recovery and faster export rates, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.
The NRIC research house predicted that Japan's box trade will increase 2.9 per cent year on year to 12.4 million TEU, having already forecast a 2.7 per cent rise in its previous report.
But Japan's biggest international forwarder Nippon Express Co, an NRIC unit, has estimated that Japan's containerised trade has slipped 0.6 per cent in fiscal 2014 from a year earlier to 12.1 million TEU.
Nonetheless, NRIC says, raising its previous forecast of a 2.5 per cent increase, that loaded container cargo exports from eight major Japanese ports will grow 3.1 per cent year-on-year to 5.1 million TEU as the global economy recovers.
Loaded container cargo exports from the eight major Japanese ports are estimated to have climbed 1.6 per cent in fiscal 2014 from a year earlier to nearly five million TEU, NRIC said.
"Exports of general machinery and chemical products are growing solidly. As for auto parts, shipments to the US are continuing to grow, while those to Europe and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations have stopped declining," NRIC said.
