JAPAN's second-largest container port after Tokyo, the Port of Yokohama, handled 219,604 TEU in January, according to data released by the Yokohama municipal government.
Within this total, foreign trade contributed 199,505 TEU, a decline of 0.4 per cent, while domestic trade rose three per cent year on year to 20,099 TEU.
Of the 199,505 TEU handled in foreign trade, 101,787 TEU were exported, up 3.5 per cent, and the remaining 97,718 TEU were imported, down 4.3 per cent year on year, reported IHS Maritime 360.
In January the port recorded total cargo throughput of 9.173 million, a decrease of 4.2 per cent compared to the same month last year.
Foreign trade contributed 5.69 million tonnes to the total, representing an increase of 2.3 per cent, while domestic trade fell 13.4 per cent year on year to 3.477 million tonnes.
In foreign trade, Yokohama exported 2.267 million tonnes of cargo, up 11.8 per cent, and imported 3.427 million tonnes of cargo, down 3.1 per cent year on year.
