AS part of the Smart Ports initiative, Singapore is to install a new 4G mobile network through a collaboration with M1 Limited to improve the connectivity of ships operating within 15 kilometres of its coastline to benefit operations and crew welfare.
Under the terms of their memorandum of understanding (MoU) the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and M1 have also committed to the research and testing of new technologies to improve the network in future.
According to the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), shared mobile data bundles of up to 100GB will be available via M1's corporate data pooling plans, with authorised employees gaining access through 4G dongles or handsets, reported London's Digital Ship.
"We envision an inter-connected port with high-speed internet, extensive use of data analytics and innovative mobile solutions," said MPA chief executive Andrew Tan.
Free WiFi will also be provided to the public at port terminals from July 1. In addition, the MPA has developed an app, "myMaritime@SG," which will give users access to maritime information, including ship arrivals and departures, port and marine notices, tidal information and route planning.
