RUSSIA's largest port operator, Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port Group (NCSP) said it handled 23.2 million tonnes of cargo in the first two month of 2015, an increase of eight per cent over the same two months in 2014.
But box throughput during the first two months of 2015 amounted to 71,800 TEU, down 33 per cent year on year, according to St Petersburg PortNews.
From January to February, NCSP handled 18.7 million tonnes of liquid cargo, which is 8.5 per cent or 1.4 million tonnes more than in the same period last year. Crude oil volumes during the same period were up by 0.5 million tonnes or four per cent to 13 million tonnes.
Bulk cargo volumes - comprising grain, fertilisers, sugar, iron ore and coal - reached 1.6 million tonnes in the first two months of 2015, up 4.7 per cent from last year.
General cargo volumes in January-February 2015 totalled 2.2 million tonnes, up by 314,000 tonnes or 16.2 per cent versus the same period last year.
"Over 10 days of storms and subsequent restrictions on rail dispatches affected most of cargoes at Novorossiysk in February," said NCSP chief executive Sultan Batov.
"Fluctuations on currency and commodity markets affected Russian foreign trade in different ways. Currently we see a better market for Russian ferrous metals but a weakening market for Russian iron ore due to global oversupply," he said.
Mr Batov also said that the import of industrial goods is decreasing, which has affected container traffic.
