NEWARK Mayor Ras Baraka has threatened to sell New Jersey seaport land if the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey do not provide more money for its use.
Mayor Baraka said that if the port authority won't do so, he is prepared to issue a request for proposals for sale of the harbour property, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.
"Either we get some serious relationship counselling or we have to seek a divorce," said Mayor Baraka in "State of the City" address.
He raised the issue last year when he appeared before the port authority board and offered to sell the property to the agency. He later said a sale of the land could provide "tens of billions of dollars" for the cash-strapped city.
Port authority chairman John Degnan, said he would consider the suggestion, but that the port authority had provided the city with US$1.5 billion in payments since 2005, some of it as voluntary contributions benefiting residents' quality of life.
