LOS ANGELES and Long Beach ports posted a 17 per cent year-on-year plunge in February's container volume to 702,205 TEU, which was blamed on harbour congestion and supply chain sabotage during recent contract talks.
Imports fell 18 per cent to 458,687 TEU while exports dropped 17 per cent to 242,518 TEU.
Congestion, which had been ongoing since mid- 2014, spiked in February when negotiations between terminal operators and dockers became deadlocked, said the ports.
"Cargo flow has improved since the end of February and throughout March," said Gene Seroka, executive director at the Port of Los Angeles, where total box volume declined 10.2 per cent in February.
The Port of Long Beach was hit hardest by the dispute, with a 20.1 per cent drop in February box volume with imports falling 24.7 per cent to 204,462 TEU while exports fell 22.9 per cent to 110,711 TEU.
