THE Port of Busan, Korea's biggest, achieved a record container throughput of 18.68 million TEU 2014, and now sets its sights on 20 million TEU in 2015.
Last year's total throughput represented a 5.6 per cent increase on 2013 and is split between 9.25 million TEU in local cargo and 9.42 million TEU of transshipment cargo, according to Busan Port Authority (BPA).
The port said import/export cargo rose 3.6 per cent year on year to 9.3 million TEU, while transshipment volumes rose 7.7 per cent to 9.4 million TEU.
It was the first time transshipment volume surpassed import/export volume at Busan in a calendar year.
At Busan New Port, 22 berths are now in operation and freight is also being handled at the Northern Logistics Park and the Western Logistics Park.
BPA is pressing ahead with plans to build eight more berths and add a further 1.91 million-square metre logistics facility on the western and southern perimeters.
Two of the world's largest containerships 18,000-TEUers, the Maersk McKinney Moller and the MSC Oscar, made Busan their maiden port call and now call regularly.
A comprehensive port entry simulation system proved it was safe for these mega ships to call and further work, including removing a small island and dredging to 17 metres, will ensure the continuing safety of these large vessels.
