INSURANCE and P&I service providers Gard and Skuld are warning tankers about the dangers of exporting Iranian crude oil via ship-to-ship transfers at Khor Fakkan, UAE, to countries not covered by the US sanctions waiver, reports London's Tanker Operator.
Evidence of a sophisticated smuggling operation has come to light and those responsible may go to considerable lengths to disguise the true origin of the cargo. Skuld advised tanker owners to exercise extreme caution when engaging in STS operations in the Middle East Gulf region.
In separate notes to their members, said that some cargoes are being described as of Iraqi origin and as having been loaded on board the transferring ship at Basrah, a couple of days before the proposed STS operation.
They warned owners/operators that the transport of Iranian oil to states, which do not benefit from the US waiver, may trigger enforcement action against the ship, its owners and related parties by the US authorities.
