THE Port of Los Angeles posted a three per cent year-on-year decline in Novcember container volume to 663,346 TEU while neighbouring Long Beach grew 2.1 per cent to 581,514 TEU, its busiest November since 2007.
In both cases empties saved the day. LA figures would have been worse if not for the 10.6 per cent increase in empties while the gain made by Long Beach came from a 30.2 per cent increase in empty boxes.
Year-to-date November LA volume went up 6.5 per cent to 7.68 million TEU as imports fell 2.7 per cent to 333,153 TEU year on year and exports declined 16 per cent to 150,568 TEU.
Year-to-date volume at Long Beach was up 1.7 per cent a rise entirely credited to a 7.9 per cent increase in empties and imports rose 2.4 per cent and exports were down 5.4 per cent.
