DESPITE nine per cent of container ships skipping Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing Container Terminal (KTCT) from January to October, throughput increased 4.7 per cent year on year to 14.8 million TEU, according to THE Hong Kong Port Development Council.
Trade groups believe most of the wiped calls were due to port congestion, the Transport and Housing Bureau (THB) told local legislators, reported IHS Maritime 360.
The average amount of time container vessels spend at berth at KTCT has been growing in recent years from 11.5 hours in 2011 and 11.8 hours in 2012 to 13.1 hours in 2013, according to Marine Department data.
The longer berthing duration was mainly due to the increase in size and loading capacity of ships, and a longer time for loading and unloading.
The average number of containers loaded and unloaded by each containership berthed at KTCT has increased to the present level of 1,700 TEU from 1,350 TEU in 2011.
At present, container volumes in Hong Kong are stable, averaging 23 million TEU per annum.
