PORT of Dublin third quarter container traffic was up 9.4 per cent to 418,867 TEU, reports the Irish Times.
"With 7.3 per cent growth in total throughput for the year so far, Dublin Port is now on course to exceed record figures posted in 2007," said port CEO Eamonn O'Reilly.
Overall cargo figures show that throughput rose 5.7 per cent to 7.8 million tonnes with year-to-date number up 7.3 per cent to 23.1 million tonnes year on year.
This compares to 23.6 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2007 "during the height of Ireland's economic activity", said the report.
Operating profits at Shannon Foynes Port were up by a third in 2013 to EUR4.1 million (US$5.1 million).
High levels of growth were recorded for trade vehicles, consisting mostly of new cars destined for dealerships around the country.
Dublin Port said there were 14,802 new trade vehicles in the third quarter, up 48.8 per cent on the same three-month period last year.
This brings the total number of trade vehicles so far this year to 58,399, up 29.8 per cent on the 44,987 that arrived in the first nine months of 2013.
There are also plans afoot for a EUR200 million redevelopment plan for a large section of the port, involving dredging the navigation channel to allow bigger ships in.
