THE Iranian Maritime General Department expects to raised IRR10 trillion (US$374.6 million) from private sources by March 20 for an upgrade of Bandar Abbas port development, reports Iran's Official Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
Annual capacity is three million TEU, which is expected to double with the completion of two container terminals under the Shahid Rajaei trade port development plan, also relayed by ZAWA-Thomson Reuters.
As it stands, the port handles 60 per cent of Iranian cargo and 90 per cent of its containers.
Port official Kheibar Hashemi said that since the beginning of the year, IRR6.1 billion of private funds have been committed to developing the Shahid Rajaei trade port in five contracts.
"The official pointed to the location of the port in the centre of south-north transit corridor, enjoying superb geographical position, having access to open seas, connection to international railway network and possessing modern facilities as being among advantages of the port for investment," said the IRNA report.
Mr Hashemi pointed to the "construction of processing and assembly industries, logistic goods and container terminals, development of transit export and grain silos as investment opportunities in Shahid Rajaei Port Special Economic Zone".
