BUSAN New Port's newest container terminal (BNCT) plans to continue growing following the completion of phase 2 to reach a maximum capacity of 3.5 million TEU with 16 ship-to-shore (STS) cranes over the next five or six years.
The South Korean container terminal is now targeting a throughput of 1.5 million TEU in its third year of operation. In 2013 it handled 1.2 million TEU, an increase of 139 per cent compared to its first year of operation.
BNCT has now completed the construction of a 16,000 TEU capacity stacking area to meet customer demand for more space, as part of its on-going Phase 2 expansion.
Early this year BNCT gained the approvals and funding needed to launch its Phase 2 expansion project, which will add 700,000 TEU capacity, bringing the total to 2.5 million TEU by May 2015.
The expansion project includes construction of additional yard blocks and the purchase of eight straddle carriers and three super-postpanamax twin lift quay cranes with 24-row outreach at 49 metres high (10 tiers on deck) to handle mega vessels.
The box terminal took delivery of three additional straddle carriers last week, which will be operational this November, reported Hellenic Shipping News of Piraeus.
Despite three additional terminals (Phase 2-4, 2-5 & 2-6) planned for Busan's New Port, no new terminals will open until after 2019, leaving it up to BNCT to construct additional capacity until then.
Other terminals in Busan's New Port are becoming full and are already operating at or near their maximum capacity and with no possibility to construct additional capacity.
Said BNCT president and CEO John Elliott: "We are proud to support Busan New Port's ability to provide capacity to the world's biggest shipping lines who continue to deploy ever bigger container vessels and rely on New Port to provide world-class service for years to come."
BNCT has four existing berths totalling 1,400 metres, and a current capacity of 1.8 million TEU. To date 20 services call at the terminal.
