THE Port of Long Beach has posted a 7.3 per cent year-on-year increase in September container throughput to 629,771 TEU, its best September since 2007, the port's peak year, say port authorities.
Imports were up 10.2 per cent year on year in September to 339,343 TEU while exports declined 12.1 per cent to 118,412 TEU. Empties increased 19.1 per cent to 172,016 TEU.
Holiday merchandise drove volumes. Year to date, container cargo was up 1.7 per cent.
The adjacent Port of Los Angeles last week posted a nine per cent year-on-year increase in container volume to 775,113 TEU in September, its best month since August 2006.
Year-to-date LA volumes were up 7.8 per cent to 6.3 million TEU. September exports increased 0.2 per cent 150,679 TEU while empties were also up 12.2 per cent during the same period.
