TWO Long Beach cargo terminals were closed for a day this week because 10- to 15-foot wave surges from Pacific Hurricane Marie that endangered longshoremen, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
Total Terminals International on Pier T, with two MSC ships at berth, and Crescent Terminals on Pier F, with two breakbulk ships including a MOL ro-ro vessel stopped working.
All other terminals at the Port of Long Beach remained open, and trucking operations at all terminals continued, including at TTI and Crescent.
Surges were so powerful that heavy rocks from the Navy Mole breakwater were tossed onto the nearby roadway. There was flooding at Crescent and two barges broke from their moorings and were later towed into berths T136 and T134.
Road damage was reported on Nimitz Road near the Sea Launch satellite-launch vessels, closing the roadway pending repairs. Sea Launch employees were being escorted through the nearby TTI terminal to get to their offices.
The port's maintenance division was working to clear the rocks from Nimitz Road, while the construction division evaluated repair work.
