THE Ukraine's first half container throughput has declined 6.45 per cent year on year to 347,573.52 TEU, reports St Petersburg PortNews, citing Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) figures.
"On the one hand, 23,000 TEU is not a huge difference; on the other hand, it can reach 50,000 TEU by the end of the year if the trend does not change," said the report.
There was 17 per cent growth in the first quarter and 6.58 per cent decline in the second, he said.
According to USPA, total transshipment of import containers (including empties) fell eight per cent to 163,035 TEU, while exports (including empties) fell 3.6 per cent to 155,225.52 TEU.
Year-on-year first quarter laden container growth was flat at 86,765 TEU, with a plunge of 28.5 per cent in the second quarter to 62,958 TEU.
Laden transshipment boxes surged by 47.3 per cent in the first quarter to 68,206 TEU followed by a 27.8 per cent increase in the second quarter to 71,678 TEU.
Laden export boxes in the second quarter had already exceeded laden import containers by almost 10,000 TEU, resulting in a lack of equipment for export.
Another problem is a mismatch of equipment with exports mostly using FEUs.
The import decline also aggravates the worsens the export situation due to lack of equipment. Though the equipment for export can be imported, the extra expense can make some exports unprofitable.
Moreover, Russo-Ukrainian hostilities have ended cargo flow to and from eastern regions and many companies have terminated their activities. Eastern regions account for 35 per cent of the country's exports and 20 per cent of its imports.
