THE Port of Hamburg handled in the first half of the year a total of 2.3 million TEU of exports, an increase of 6.3 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier, while imports were up 7.4 per cent to 2.5 million TEU.
At 588,000 TEU, empty box volume declined by 2.1 per cent.
The port handled 51.6 million tons of general cargo in the first half, an increase of 8.8 per cent.
"We can see extraordinarily strong growth in loaded container handling: 4.2 million full boxes went over the quay walls in Hamburg," said Port of Hamburg Marketing board member Axel Mattern.
"That is 8.2 per cent more than in the previous year and more than ever before in the port's history in a first half year," he said.
Good coordination of construction sites in the port and its main traffic axes greatly facilitated cargo flow and contributed to the record results, he said.
"The fourth tube of the Elbe Tunnel, which is again in use, has visibly relieved the traffic situation. The maintenance work necessary on the Kohlbrand bridge in the port is also making good progress and will be completed in October," said Mr Mattern.
