TWO Greek and Pakistani seamen taken by pirates three weeks ago off the Nigerian coast in an attack on the 281,000-dwt Kalamos have been freed, reports London's Tanker Operator.
While shipmanager Aeolos Management refused details on how the release was effected, it appears ransom was paid, given the company's fears that providing more information "might encourage further attacks and hostage taking".
The company said in a statement that pending medical examinations the three men would be flown home to recover from their "traumatic experience".
It expressed its "great sadness" over the death of the crude oil carrier tanker's chief officer in the February 3 attack in the Gulf of Guinea.
At the time, the tanker was anchored and waiting to load for China at Qua Iboe oil terminal operated by ExxonMobil when it was boarded by the pirates.
