THE first of two Wuhan-built 1,700-tonne displacement P18N offshore patrol vessels ordered by the Nigerian Navy has arrived in Lagos, soon to take up anti-piracy duties of the coast of West Africa.
The NNS Centenary, similar in scale to the German built to the three corvettes of South Africa's navy, was built by China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company (CSOC) at Wuchang Shipyard in Wuhan, and sailed for Nigeria in December.
The 95-metre corvette has an endurance of 20 days and a range of 3,000 nautical miles (5,556 kilometres) at 14 knots, reports IHS Janes 360.
While the initial plan was for the second vessel to be completed at a refurbished naval yard in Nigeria's Port Harcourt, the Unity has been photographed being outfitted in Wuchang.
The main gun is fed by 152 ready rounds and has selectable rates of fire of 30, 60 and 120 rounds per minute. The 120 rounds per minute rate is achieved by firing a burst of 75, but afterwards the gun must cool off for 30 minutes.
And upgraded Chinese version of the Russian gun adopts a stealthy turret design, and more composite material and can fire a bursts of 150.
The vessel may accommodate a Z- 9 helicopter thanks to its helipad, but only rotary unmanned aerial vehicles can fit the hangar space.
