(DIP) EVERTHING SAID IN CYPRUS NEGOTIATION PROCESS, TURKISH AMBASSADOR

LEFKOSA (A.A) - Turkey's ambassador in Lefkosa said on Tuesdaythat everything had been said in Cyprus negotiation process.Speaking at a TV program broadcast by the Turkish Cypriot TV channel BRT,Turkish ambassador Kaya Turkmen said Cyprus talks had been going on for years andthe process had reached a breaking point nowadays.Turkmen said a solution should be found to the Cyprus matter until the endof 2010 and the Greek Cypriot party should be convinced on the issue.Turkmen also noted that Turkey would not give up on Cyprus for its EUmembership process."I do not believe that Turkey has to make a choice betweenCyprus and EU,"he said.Commenting on relations between Turkey and Turkish Republic of NorthernCyprus (TRNC) as well, Turkmen said both countries might have made mistakes intheir relations throughout the process in Cyprus, however, necessary lessonsshould be drawn from such acts."Despite all criticisms, TRNC is a success story,"the ambassador said,adding that Turkish Cypriots had done nothing to deserve embargoes.(DO-AY)

Germany's defense minister says the commander of the troubled navy training ship has been relieved of his duties and the vessel ordered to return amid questions surrounding the death of a sailor on board late last year. Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said the Gorch Fock would remain in port pending the results of an investigation into the death of the 25-year-old sailor who plunged from the ship's rigging in November. Guttenberg told ARD public broadcaster on Saturday Jan. 22, 2011 the ship would not be used for training pending the outcome of an investigation. Guttenberg consistently polls as one of the nation's most popular politicians, but has come under pressure in recent weeks over a series of issues in the military, including the death on the Gorch Fock.
