(DIP) TURKISH CYPRIOT LEADER ON HIS VISIT TO SPAIN

ISTANBUL (A.A) - President Mehmet Ali Talat of the TurkishRepublic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said that he had a quite beneficial meetingwith Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos on the Cyprus negotiationprocess.President Talat told reporters after his arrival from Spain as the guest ofthe Spanish government,"Moratines told me that he would do everything in hispower to help the TRNC. Spain wants to deal with the Cyprus issue seriously aspresident of the European Union. The most important aspect of this visit was thatSpain, which holds the rotating presidency of the Union, invited us. Any EUpresidency has not invited us before. Spain was the first."President Talat paid a three-day visit to Spain and held a series of talkswith Spanish authorities including Foreign Minister Moratinos and former ForeignMinister Marcelino Oreja.(UK)

Germany's defense minister says the commander of the troubled navy training ship has been relieved of his duties and the vessel ordered to return amid questions surrounding the death of a sailor on board late last year. Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said the Gorch Fock would remain in port pending the results of an investigation into the death of the 25-year-old sailor who plunged from the ship's rigging in November. Guttenberg told ARD public broadcaster on Saturday Jan. 22, 2011 the ship would not be used for training pending the outcome of an investigation. Guttenberg consistently polls as one of the nation's most popular politicians, but has come under pressure in recent weeks over a series of issues in the military, including the death on the Gorch Fock.
