A 120-metre Dutch cargo vessel, the Nordland, ran aground around midnight October 12 in the south-west archipelago near Turku. On Wednesday morning, the ship was taking on water, but was not in danger of sinking, according to the Finnish Border Guard's Sea Maritime Centre.

The ship's condition was reported as being stable on Wednesday morning. A Border Guard patrol boat was on hand and a helicopter was standing by in case the situation of the ship and its crew of 13 changed. The vessel was not carrying cargo when it ran aground. No oil spill was detected from the vessel during the night, but it was likely that an aerial inspection of the area will be carried out during the day.

A tugboat and divers were also standing by to aid in refloating the Nordland. A decision on refloating was to be made once a thorough inspection and evaluation of damage was carried out.
