Sierra Leone flagged Kayan-1
Sierra Leone-flagged Kayan-1, an 86-meter (282-feet) freighter carrying
empty containers, was trying to moor due to the severe weather when it
got dragged and brushed against two other cargo ships, the
Netherlands-flagged Slochterdiep and Tanzania-flagged Adria Blu. It came
to a halt near the shore at a depth of some 9-meter (30-feet), Coastal
Safety said on its website.
UPDATE: Kayan 1 evacuated and run aground
In the midday hours of Jan 20, 2012, the "Kıyı Emniyeti 5"
evacuated the crew from the "Kayan 1" in pos. 40o 58 '604''N 28o 53
'234''E which was down by the stern and had a list of 20 degrees to
starboard then due to a water ingress in the cargo hold. The 13 men left
the unloaded ship climbing down a ladder on port side. The ship had
been blown by SW-gusts against the Dutch "Slochterdiep“ and the
Tansania-flagged "Adria Blu“ at 5.20 a.m. while mooring and was breached
in the stern. Both other ships were slightly damaged. The tugs and
rescue boats "Kurtarma 3", "Söndüren 7" and "Tahlisiye III" tried to
take the foundering ship in tow and intentionally grounded it on a water
depth of nine metres.
