Salvage company Svitzer are said to be seeking assurance of up to 80 per cent of the value of the cargo to cover their costs while salvage fees for the MSC Napoli were between 50 and 60 per cent.
To date, 166 containers have been removed from the vessel of the 1,368 boxes aboard, 32 of which are said to be carrying dangerous goods, according to Maritime New Zealand, the national coast guard agency.
The vessel has been stranded on the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of New Zealand's North Island since October 5. Container recovery operations commenced on November 16.
