Vessel stranded in Kiel due to serious engine trouble

On Oct 28, 2011, the "Transatlantic" enroute Muuga suffered engine failure when transiting the Kiel Canal eastbound near the passing point Königsförde.

As it was impossible to restart the machine, tugs were called and towed the ship to the Voith Quay in Kiel, where technicians who were called tried to fix the engine jointly with the crew.

But the damage was so significant, that it had to be decided to unload the container cargo in the East Shore Port in Kiel. For this purpose, the tugs "Kitzeberg" and "Holtenau" pulled the disabled ship through the Kiel-Canal locks on Nov 3 and pulled it to berth 3.

When the cargo is stored on shore, the ship will be moved to another berth in port where the main engine can be repaired within the forthcoming weeks.

The ship had just started being operated by Hapag Lloyd some weeks ago after an overhaul of almost two years length in the USA following its five-year-long service as a supplier for the US Air Base Garcia as "Baffub Strait" for the Military Sealift Command.
