Hanjin container ship on fire off Suez Canal
Several deck containers of the "Hanjin Green Earth" caught fire on May 1, 201, at 02.30 a.m. while vessel was transiting the Suez Canal in northern direction.
The fire was contained with Suez Canal emergency service assistance, the vessel completed its passage and was drifting off Port Said anchorage in the afternoon, and the Suez Canal Authority deployed five emergency response vessels to battle the fire.
On May 4 the fire is still on, and at least 50 containers damaged or destroyed after the fire spread to containers loaded with inflammable goods. Navigation in the canal was unaffected by the incident. The ship was underway from Asia with Jeddah as last port of call to North European ports.
