The first ship of the year to travel Seaway St. Lawrence River ran aground near the locks at Beauharnois, Montérégie, early Friday morning.
Around 5 am 30, the Canadian bulk carrier CWB Marquis, who had left the port of Montreal on Wednesday, hit huge ice dams near the Anchor Pointe Fortier.
No crew member was injured, authorities said. The Office of the Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB) sent a team on site.
The specialists will have what they call the "documentation" of the premises, or to interview the crew, inspect the vessel, to see if there is one inside data logger and learn about the weather and on river conditions, among others, said Chris Krepski, spokesman for the TSB.
The ship was eventually towed to 18 h 30. The freighter, which was carrying iron ore, is over 222 meters long by 23 m wide.
The ship belongs to the Canadian Wheat Board company, headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It is designed to navigate the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes.
