Giant container ship "Umm Salal" aground on Scheldt river
In the morning of Jan 31, 2015, the "Umm Salal", coming from the Antwerp Gateway Terminal, ran aground on the river Scheldt near Lillo. The Container ship had öeft the Deurgang Dock at 8:40 a.m. and was turned towards the North Sea by two tugs when the engines failed and the heavily loaded vessel ran aground outside the shipping channel in the mud. Five additional URS-tugs were called to assist in a race against time as the tide would be receding at 10 a.m. The engine breakdown on board could be remedied and the ship was refloated at 9.20 a.m. After the incident the "Umm Salal" was pulled back to the PSA Deurganck Terminal to be inspected and berthed around 10.15 a.m.
